Why OG Instruction?

Join us! All my instruction is completed live online via Zoom. I have completed training via Zoom for the past eight years with trainees all over the world with fabulous results. You can learn at home or anywhere! No traveling is required.

Start your coursework straight away: I offer the training several times a year. No need to wait! You may start your practicum immediately and submit your lessons for review on your schedule. As I am an Accredited Training Fellow, you may apply any time of the year and wait only four weeks to have your Academy application approved instead of 4 months.

Personalized hands-on training from an Accredited Training Fellow: Even though I am an Accredited Training Fellow with the Academy, I personally deliver and oversee all aspects of every trainee's OG training - coursework through to each and every one of your practicums. I will help you become the best, most confident, and most effective practitioner you can be.

Insight, compassion, and understanding: As the parent of grown dyslexic children, I understand the parent's perspective. I share my experience as both a parent navigating the school system and a parent-educator, to the benefit of all my trainees - those who have dyslexic children and those who teach dyslexic children.

Feel supported: I know firsthand the many ways in which quality OG instruction can change a child's life forever. I generally care about my trainees and the difference they will make in the world and to the families they support. This is a unique experience. I want every trainee to feel supported in the journey. I am always available to answer questions and offer support, before, during, and after the training. Once their training has been completed, trainees are welcome to review the coursework again at no extra charge. My goal is to have properly trained teachers.

Dyslexia

Dyslexia is a specific learning disability that is neurobiological in origin. It is characterized by difficulties with accurate and/or fluent word recognition and by poor spelling and decoding abilities.

These difficulties typically result from a deficit in the phonological component of language that is often unexpected in relation to other cognitive abilities and the provision of effective classroom instruction.

Secondary consequences may include problems in reading comprehension and reduced reading experience that can impede the growth of vocabulary and background knowledge.

What is the Orton-Gillingham Approach?

The OG approach is Personalized, Multisensory, Diagnostic and Prescriptive, Direct Instruction, Systematic Phonics, Applied Linguistics, Linguistic Competence, Systematic, and Structured, Sequential, Incremental and Cumulative, Continuous Feedback and Positive Reinforcement, Cognitive Approach, and Emotionally Sound.

The Orton-Gillingham Approach, is an approach rather than a program; instruction using this approach allows the teacher to instruct the child at the level of his or her need and make informed, diagnostic decisions about the direction that particular student’s curriculum should take. The knowledge of the teacher and the ability to assess a student during the lesson allows for an approach that uses a student’s strengths to address areas of weakness. Each lesson is based on the careful analysis of the previous one – thus being diagnostic and prescriptive.

The Orton-Gillingham Academy Approach is designed for educators, tutors, special education, reading teachers, parents of children with learning difficulties, professionals in children’s health sectors, and individuals seeking a career in educational therapy. It is appropriate for teaching in the primary grades through college level and adults. No previous experience is necessary to complete this training.

“Laurie,

Thank you so much for providing an OG experience that surpassed my expectations. Oh, how I wish we worked together….the laughter would never end! You have a marvelous gift of being able to share your knowledge with every level of learner and your passion for your work is infectious.

You are a ‘wicked ahhhhhsome rock stahhhhh‘ OG Fellow!

With Gratitude,

Kathleen

Thank you Laurie!

I am so grateful for all that you have taught me. When I started this journey a year ago, I was feeling so helpless and distressed about how much work lay ahead of me regarding E.'s literacy development. But now, I’m so excited about everything that I’ve learned from you, and mostly I’m just so grateful because you have helped me give E. this amazing gift of learning to read and spell. He’s so proud and his confidence has blossomed. I seriously cried listening to him read at bedtime tonight. My confidence has improved also 😊 So thank you, thank you, thank you.

Jenn

I wanted to thank you so much for all the help you have provided me over the last couple of years. It truly has been life-changing for me to finally realize the potential I have and the knowledge/enjoyment I do gain from reading. I can’t tell you how grateful I am to now have the ability to learn so much. My confidence and spirit have always been lacking (academically and at times socially) my entire life because of the insecurities I have had related to my reading level but now they are at an all-time high.

Again, thank you so much for all the help you have given me over the years. I truly am a different and better version of myself because of you!

Justin

Designation

Thank you so much for the wonderful training that you provided for the last two weeks! You did a fabulous job covering the material, making sure that we understood it, and reviewing it when necessary. Everyone, no matter the level of background knowledge, felt included, and validated. Training by way of Zoom can be challenging, but you have mastered it. I woke up this morning already missing the training sessions. Although I am a trained Wilson Practitioner, it was exciting to learn the true Orton-Gillingham method. I will never look at a word quite the same again. 😊

Dyslexic children are my passion. I have always said that I truly have the best job in the world. It is so rewarding to see the confidence and spirit of a child return as they realize that they can be successful after struggling for so long. Through your training sessions, you are able to impact the number of children exponentially via all the associates that you train. YOU are making a difference and touching lives that you will never know.

Thanks again for everything! I am looking forward to the practicum and learning more under your guidance.

Best wishes,
Jennifer
