Providing 1 to 1 individual, multisensory, structured, sequential, cumulative cognitive, diagnostic and prescriptive, specialized Orton-Gillingham lessons. My staff of OG Instruction teachers have completed their 64 hours of coursework in the Associate Level of the Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practitioners and Educators and are completing their practicum, provide instruction under the guidance of Laurie D. Leason, Fellow, and her OG Instruction teachers. Lessons run a minimum of 2 lessons per week or up to 5 times per week. Please note that the more frequent the lessons are, the greater the impact on the student’s learning. These OG lessons are individually designed for the needs of your child. This instruction includes remediation with your child’s phoneme isolation, correct pronunciation of phonemes, blending real and nonsense words, segmenting real and nonsense words, phonological awareness, phonological memory, short-term working memory, fluency, phrasing skills, punctuation, decoding strategies, word attack, accuracy, rate, processing speed, working memory speed, phoneme-grapheme correspondence, multiple spellings, short vowel rules, digraphs, blending drills, SOS spelling, writing words, phrases and sentences, vocabulary, prefixes, bases, suffixes, syllable types, syllable division, history of language, structure of language, script and cursive writing, advanced writing, grammar, and Structured Word Inquiry. With our OG Instruction, students experience automaticity of skills, confidence, positive self-esteem, engagement in lessons, reduction of compensation strategies, a desire to read and understand the language, someone understanding them, someone finally knows how to help them, and reading at home with their family, and to develop a love of reading.
OG Math, Executive Functioning, and Study Skills lessons are also available, at our OG Instruction Learning Centre, at an arranged location or via Zoom.
Please note: Our OG Instructors have received 64 hours of training at the Associate Level from the Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practitioners & Educators, as well as at least 100 hours of practicum under the guidance of Laurie D. Leason, Fellow. Our OG Instructors are highly trained. We do not follow a program or a book. We follow what your child needs; diagnosing and prescribing what instruction your child needs every lesson. All of our teachers have been working with dyslexic students for over 17 years, and some have dyslexic children of our own. We have personal as well as professional experience. We are the only Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practitioners & Educators Certified Teachers in Western New York and the surrounding areas. This training makes all the difference in the world.
“Orton-Gillingham is an instructional approach intended primarily for use with persons who have difficulty with reading, spelling, and writing of the sort associated with dyslexia. It is most properly understood and practiced as an approach, not a method, program, system or technique. In the hands of a well-trained and experienced instructor, it is a powerful tool of exceptional breadth, depth, and flexibility.”
The Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practitioners and Educators is unique as it is the only organization established and authorized to set and maintain professional and ethical standards for the practice of the Orton-Gillingham Approach and to certify teachers and accredit instructional programs that meet these standards. Currently, there are many programs that are Orton-Gillingham-based, including Wilson Language, Fundations, and the Sonday System. These programs all begin at a basic level (such as closed syllable words) and progress in a specific sequence dictated by the program. The Orton-Gillingham Approach, in contrast, is an approach rather than a program; instruction using this approach allows the teacher to instruct the child at the level of his or her need and make informed, diagnostic decisions about the direction that particular student’s curriculum should take. It is the original Orton-Gillingham training, that all the others are based on.
